FSC Pocket Loox 720

FSC Pocket Loox 720

Postby niki » Jan 8, 2005 @ 3:33pm

I was wondering why we have never spoken about the PL720..from the reviews I just read it looks far more better than the Asus A730 considering:
PROS
-really good battery life
-screen quality (PL has a Sony screen while A730 a sharp one)
-high grip thanks to rubber sides
-good design
-loud and crisp speaker
-almost same performance as the A730
-Mp3 player like audio quality

There would be no reason to buy the A730 since the PL720 has all those features!

The problem is you can't get any kind of warranty for the Loox 720 here in North America or anywhere other than Europe (except maybe Australia?) while you can get the best warranty for the A730. So it's really a gamble to go for the Loox 720, unless of course you live in Europe.

1)A long lasting battery life to play Mp3s
2)The best screen to watch my photos
3)Decent video playback
4)Dual slot expansion
5)Bluetooth
6)Bluetooth GPS ability

PS:I'm not an hardcore gamer (u could ask me: what the hell are u doing here so?? )

Ah. I'd go for the Loox then cause the warranty would probably be much better for the Loox over the Asus in Europe and I'm sure you could get the Loox for much cheaper over there aswell. For more info on FSC Loox products and a great Loox 720 community check out www.firstloox.org

The Asus has a slightly larger screen though, so some people might like that. Also, I've never been a fan of rubber sides, but that's just personal preference. The Loox 720 design is ok, but the button design is quite poor imo. Personally though, I would get the X50v mainly because it's more than 100 cheaper (and sometimes way cheaper with coupons) and it has the 2700g. But I have no plans to upgrade yet.

1 - the Loox 720 has much, much better battery life than the Asus a730. It also has a battery charger on the cradle making it much easier to keep a second battery charged. Also - Mugen are shortly coming out with an extended battery for the Loox 720.

2 - Opinions differ but I would say the Loox 720 is the best screen I've seen to date (and boy have I seen them all!).

3 - BetaPlayer works like a charm on the 720 and its creator - Picard - has done a lot to improve it further.

4 - Dual slot - check...

5 - Bluetooth - the Loox 720 has version 1.2 which means less interference with WiFi than version 1.1 (which is what the Asus has).

6 - Bluetooth GPS - well, I use a BT GPS solution almost daily with my Loox 720...

To correct you on one point, however - the Loox 720 deosn't have rubber sides (bearing in mind what a nuisance they were on the iPAQ 221x that is not a bad thing...)

Many of those points are debatable judging by what I've read from the other threads, so don't take the above as full gospel.

If my honesty is being called into question I would prefer to know exactly what you dispute? Only one of the points I make is not purely objective - and I qualified it myself with the phrase 'opinions differ'.

Nearly every point you mentioned I've read differing opinions on, it's not as clear cut as you make it to be.

What - that it has Bluetooth 1.2 (designed specifically to reduce interference with WiFi)?
That it has dual slots?
That BetaPlayer works just fine on it (hasn't failed me once)?
That it works with BT GPS (frankly I'd be lost - pun intended - without it)?
That it has a battery charger on the cradle (hey - I can send you a photo)?
Or is it the superior battery life you take issue with? Point me to just one (only one) piece of contrary evidence - 'cos I would say that it is a simple proven fact (not least because the Loox has a much bigger battery) - proven by SPB testing in numerous reviews.

It is very easy to say 'it's not as clear cut as you make it to be' - but unless you have specific points then you are guilty of mere innuendo. As I said before - only one of the points I made is actually a matter of opinion - all the rest are objective facts - whether you like it or not

I don't know what either device has, I'm merely going by following the threads. If you want contrary evidence, go look when the question was asked many other times, because I really don't care enough to.

The way you phrase Betaplayer, GPS, dual slots, WiFi/BT makes it seem like it's specific to the 720 only. And I run both BT and WiFi at the same time on my 620BT without losing a signal in either, so I don't know what that 1.2 reducing interference is quite about.

Battery life tests have come out a million different ways, SPB's benchmarks doesn't standardize conditions for batteries neccecarily. Also, the battery life is NOT "much, much, better" - again look at every thread in the past week about the two device, some show the A730 as ahead, or near. Besides your battery point, every other point the A730 has too. So why do you use them as advantages?

This is quite easy to explain. The CCK modulation modes of 802.11b can easily be disturbed by other signals in the same band. As result the frame error rate increase and the transmission will fallback to DPSK. With other words, you get a much lower performance when using bluetooth 1.1 and 802.11b together.
