Try removing the battery, connecting up the power and trying the contacts with a multimeter to see where the juice is. However, just knowing which contacts do the charging isn't probably enough.
The PDA's processor probably controls the charging speed/voltage etc. An external charger would need to have that sort of information, rather than just being raw electrical contacts.
Has anyone tried a AC-USB type of charger?
