After several hours of struggling to understand how fonts are created & called into use I have finally succeeded in my efforts to select any true type font and use it on a PocketFrog surface.
The resulting code is only a few lines and works with at least DrawText and ExtTextOut. No extra headers needed.
I will start writing my next chapter (3) on using PocketFrog which will cover reading the stylus & hard buttons & drawing text using True Type Fonts.
After chapter 3 there will be a fun chapter on sprites & other graphics.
