Blit.exe fatal application error on Jornada 568

Using a Jornada 568 running pocketPC 2002
I built the sample Blit.exe using
Win32 (WCE ARM) Release
PocketPC 2002 (Default Device)
It runs great - I can turn display on and off and it comes right back unless I leave it running for a while.
After the display goes off (sleep mode) I bring it back pushing the power button
I have a 4 digit password setup - so when I power on one of two things happens...
if the password window does not open (not enough time goes by for it to lock) everything comes back ok...
but if the enter password window comes up - I enter my password and Blit.exe has crashed with a generic Fatal Application Error.
other people can test this on any pocketPC 2002 device by enabling password, start blit.exe (or some other pocket frog app) and let it go off so that the password screen comes back on
