Are there any instructions available for this game that make sense? The ones that come with it seem like someone's very rough draft, there isn't anything useful on the Simusoft web site, and nothing about the interface or the spell system in particular is intuitive.

Heh, I agree. Except I only played the demo about 4 or 5 times. There was only so much one can figure out on their own. Surely a manual should be available to both demo and purchasers. Very impressive game though in look and sound. If only I knew how to play I might consider buying it.
