MODs

I think with the current voxel engine it would be very difficult to make an all inside level. But what we could have is caves and stuff like that. Take a look at Warcraft I and see how they did thier caves.

// Fredrik

Since it is just a terrain map and the varying shades of grey create smooth terrain, couldn't you just limit it to black and white to generate a flat floor and straight walls?

Now that I think about it, it probably wouldn't map the texture properly to the vertical surfaces.

Sorry, I don't know too much about voxel technology. But mods are definately of interest to me.

yep, I used to play with voxel-style level editors. It´s very easy to make mountains and blhblagh in this kind of editor, but you dont get a full control over the map. I mean, you just go and paint the screen with white ink. ;)
But it´s still very fun...

Well the problem with straight walls is that they won't be fully straight. This is because of a simple thing called bilinear filtering. The source image is smaller than the actual map. This is to save storage space. Then I scale it using bilinear filtering (making it smooth and and blocky). One thing you could do is to have walls that aren't supposed to be straight...you know sometimes in SciFi movies the walls are angled...you could do that in the game...I might even give it a shot...

// Fredrik

Tell us how it goes. I'd be very interested in hearing. But in the development of a good game they don't say, oh we can't do that with what we currently have. They make what the need. Just some words of encouragment, or something. I don't know. I don't even want inside levels much anymore, although it would make for cool missions.

Actually angled walls might be better. It will give a wider FOV and allow the player to see more of the building interior. Besides, it does look more high tech and would work equally well for things like caves.

I'm not interested in inside levels. I would like to create a map that was outdoors (like most of the argentum levels will be), with a few larger buildings you can go inside.

Yep, I dont like inside levels too. Actually, I like to build giant bases with walls, lasers, factories and stuff...That´s why I like skirmish mode
