I think it's too expensive to give it just 'a try'

I think AW offer a free 30 day trial. I dont know what restrictions it implies though.

Goto:

http://www.aw.sgi.com

The textures and the model detail are very simple.
The images are on average about 60x60 pixels, so overdetailing can kill the image. Thats is why I havent offered large renders of the units yet. When I get all off them out of the way,I can goto town on creating some nice NURBS surfaces and great textures for high res renders.

John
How much harder is to learn compared to 3D Studio Max? I have 3D Studio Max, but it's a pain to understand.

Hard question. But for me it was easier than 3dsmax. I found it easier to navigate and the modeller was quicker. But I have known people find it much hard than max, but I guess it has to do with how you work within the package.

Out of all the packages I have used (3ds4, max, softimage and maya) it is by far my favourite.

John

I'm a Rhino3D user. It's a great NURBS based modeling tool, however it does lack in the texture mapping area.

http://www.rhino3d.com

Here's what I've learned throughout the years- it doesn't much matter what tools you use, as long as you arrive at the desired result.

I own the full version of 3D Studio Max R2 and Character Studio, and it IS difficult to learn at first. But there are numerous tutorials online to get you started in the right direction.

I'm just glad this discussion hasn't turned into another "Maya sucks, you should use 3DSMax" flamewar. Obviously the tools Lomax is using are right for the job, and that is all that matters.

Randall, you are so true. I do have both 3D Studio Max R2 and Character Studio, Just that there tools are like all over the place, but then again, thats me. I'm just curious like as far as texture wise and usage, which will be an easier enviorment to learn. I had gone through some of 3D Studio Max tutorial and it was a bit difficult. After a year now, I'm still having trouble with it. I'm just curious if Maya will be the samething.

Randall is very right that its what you get out of the software that counts.

Give maya a try if you dont feel comfortable with max. It cant hurt.

Also I really like rhino as a modeler, it is very powerfull (and was written by some of the people who helped provided the nurbs support for aw software). It is also not too expensive (in comparison to max and maya), so give it a wirl.

Hope it goes well.

John

Thanx, Hopefully....I'll be able help within someway once I fully understand the softwares. I've been a usage of Lightwave when they first hit, remember Bablon 5?. Yeah, rendering took days.
