I don't have ethernet...doesn't that require you to have a wireless lan thingie in your PPC?

No, Ethernet NICs are available in CF format. Ethernet is at least 20 times faster than USB, especially for debugging on the device.

Dan East

Yep, although I don't know how the throughput compares to Ethernet 10Base-T (which is 10 MBit/S ).

Dan East

I've never understood why they use megaBITS per second. Who measures transfer in bits? It must date back to the mid-seventies when a Kilobyte was alot.

They use bits per second because with some protocols you need to send more than 8 bits (start bit, data bits, stop bit, parity bit) to represent a byte. So the bytes per second rate would differ depending on which protocol you used.

oh.. that makes more sense. I thought it was just DATA transfer and didn't include the start/stop bits and stuff.

So it doesn't exactly tell you how fast the data is transferring.

You can divide the bits by 8 to get a rough conversion to bytes/sec. The problem is that any protocols you run (TCP/IP, etc) will add additional overhead that will reduce throughput.

Dan East

I've always divided the Mbits/second by 8 to get an approximate Mbytes/second. I just never realized why they were in MBits in the first place... until now.
