WiFi Programming?

I am working on a piece of software, which in conjuction with my GPS, will allows me to create coverage maps for my WiFi hotspots.
The questions is ... how can I programatically get the WiFi signal strength?
This seems like something totally undocumented.
I would preffer an EVC3/4 solution instead of .NET
