The CE OS provides such a layer of abstraction that it's not directly possible. However some hardware (the Cassiopeia E-105 in particular) provides a method of direct access through which Consumer IR can be implemented via software. To my knowledge most devices support IrDA directly at the hardware level, which makes it impossible to achieve the type direct control needed to produce Consumer IR output. Finally, the IrDA standard emits IR at a much, much lower intensity than Consumer IR, which would require the Pocket PC to be within a couple feet of the device you are trying to control. The Casio program Moose mentioned is the only one I've ever heard of. Someone came up with a method to modify their Casio to increase the IR output intensity, which boosted the range to several feet or so. Even then I believe that program had to be "tuned" to match a particular device (since even identical pieces of hardware vary slightly in performance due to the manufacturing process).

This issue has been brought up since the beginning of Windows CE, because obviously a Pocket PC could easily be the world's most advanced remote control. It would be incredibly cheap for an OEM to add Consumer IR capability to their hardware, even if it was simply done in parallel to the existing IrDA hardware.

Dan East
