Support for NVIDIA OpenGL ES/WM6/Gizmondo announced for 3.20

Postby edge » Sep 13, 2007 @ 2:25pm

Elements Interactive B.V. announces version of 3.20 of EDGELIB, the next upcoming release of its multi-platform mobile game engine technology. This new version adds support for OpenGL® ES for the NVIDIA® GoForce® GPU chipsets, Windows Mobile 6 and the Gizmondo handheld device.

EDGELIB 3.20 brings hardware accelerated OpenGL ES support to NVIDIA-powered devices by including support for the NVIDIA GoForce GPUs, like the GoForce 5500. Devices running this chipset include the O2 XDA Flame and EM ONE. The industry-standard OpenGL ES (Open Graphics Library for Embedded Systems) is a subset of the OpenGL 3D graphics API and is specifically designed for embedded devices.

The latest installment of EDGELIB includes native support for Windows Mobile 6, the latest release of Microsoft's mobile operating system. Developers wishing to target native Windows Mobile 6 applications can use EDGELIB 3.20 to do so. Both libraries for Windows Mobile 6 Standard and Windows Mobile 6 Professional SDKs will be included.

EDGELIB 3.20 also introduces support for the Gizmondo handheld gaming console. This device is created by (now defunct) Tiger Telematics, but still has a large homebrew and open source community. The Gizmondo runs Windows CE 4.20 and is equipped with an NVIDIA GPU, OpenGL ES, GPS unit, Bluetooth and camera.

Other improvements include the merging of the OpenGL ES plugin libraries into one generic library, CAB creation support in the EDGELIB Builder tool and the possibility of reading serial numbers of GP2X devices running firmware 2.00 or higher. The addition of forward compatibility to Windows Mobile 2002 builds, make Windows Mobile 2003+ devices work correctly on rotated displays. A few issues will be fixed to improve stability.

The release of EDGELIB SDK 3.20 is scheduled for late September 2007.

If you have any thoughts, comments or questions, please feel free to post your them in the official EDGELIB SDK forum. We are really interested in your feedback and will be happy to answer all your questions!
