To alter the brightness place the line <br><br>r_fullbright "1"<br><br>in your autoexec.cfg file.<br>It seems to give a speed boost<br>probably to do with shadows,<br>dynamic lighting and the like.<br>But the main advantage is playing<br>with the backlight off in daylight<br>

Don't think it gives a speedboost so much as make you feel that's the case.<br><br>Oh and there are no 'Shadows' enabled in Quake, you could but that'd really kill it (r_shadows or something).

Shadows are only in glQuake, and they aren't even great shadows in that case, only using the opengl call if I'm not mistaken. Turning on fullbright should give a speec increase, as it essentially bypasses all the lighting if I'm not mistaken
