Speed / Quality Config Optimizations

FPS USING STYLUS

Postby Spawn666 » Jan 21, 2004 @ 3:42pm

Hi, i have a toshiba E400 ppc, with a 300Mhz intel Xscale processor. in the demo1 i get 11.0 fps with srtandard config but when i use the stylus for loooking (like mouselook) the framerate drops to 5.4fps, does n e 1 else have this problem and can it be fixed?
thnx, spawn ;)

It is a known issue that when the screen is touched, the OS / touchscreen drivers use a significant amount of CPU resources processing that input. So imagine that your 400 MHz device can only run at 350 MHz when the stylus is touching the screen. That affects all games, and most all devices. Try searching the developer's forum here at PM for more info.

It also appears that Toshibas are worse in this respect.

Overclocked

Postby spawn666 » Jan 21, 2004 @ 6:26pm

OK, Thnx (grat game BTW) i just overclocked my PPC from 300MHz to 475MHz and used the optimized autoexec.cfg and i get 20.7fps, it seems to be in a sort of "fast formard" mode, so im gunna try it with default cfg or is there a command to limit the fps?

r_maxsurfs and r_maxedges. Those shouldn't be limited by default. It is possible your device is not stable at that higher speed. Do the walls disappear when running at the normal CPU speed?

If you are doing a timedemo then it will run as fast as possible - it has to in order to determine the max FPS it can render at.

Hey, question, I am optimizing my config, got my MobilePro 770 up to 3.9fps which isn't too bad considering that it runs on a 133mhz MIPS and it runs in 320x240 on the HPC...

but I am looking to increase it further, and one config file switch I know mad a BIG increase on the PC was r_dynamic "0"

which turns off all dynamic lighting, then you can just turn up ambient lights a bit, and presto, you have nearly doubled your framerate... but the pocketquake doesn't recognize this command in the autoexec.cfg

it also doesn't seem to recognize nosound either, because I want to turn all sound off which normally increases performance too...

Can anyone offer some suggestions on this one?

Later on I will post my config once it is optimized completely, because I managed with this config to bring my FPS from .8fps up to 3.9fps which is a big jump... so it should work wonders on some of the newer machines

(those numbers are from timedemo demo1, I haven't tried it on any optimized maps yet, speaking of which where can I download the optimized maps? they seem to be gone off the pocketmatrix download site)

thanks

yes, the walls are ok now iv set those settings back, thnx! also is it normal for the system information to display 200MHz even though the overclock is set to 500MHz in XScaleCTRL? im askin because when i overclock from 300 to 400 it displays 400 but anything higher displays as 200.. could this be because 500MHz processors arnt available yet?

ok sorry about the multiple post i keep remembering stuff i shud have put in the first post lol, neway..
in landscape mode i cant bind the left/right arrows to the turn left/right commands, it strafes instead! help plz! i wanna do this because when i use the stylus to mouselook i cant stand the slowdown!

There's an option in the options menu that'll turn that off.

Anyone have any suggestions on my optimizations above? (the dynamic lights and such?)

I've looked at the source and I see no reason those variables shouldn't work. Try typing them in manually in the console, and double-check your autoexec.cfg to make sure there aren't any syntax errors, etc.

Hello,

I discovered Quake for the Pocket PC a few days ago and nearly wet my pants :D I am an ex PALM user and boy, what I've been missing...

Anyway, here are the stats for my H2215:

Portrait, 400 MHz, No optimisation: 14.7fps
Portrait, 400 MHz, Opti by Mali (see page 1): 17.5fps
Portrait, 473 MHz, Opti by Mali: 20.8fps

Considering I was more than happy with 14.7, 20.8 is just plain greedy!

Mike.

I tested it on my e335, and r_dynamic "0" isn't recognized in either the console or autoexec. Darn.

Oh well.
