More reasons to why they measure bandwidth in bits per second:

1. It is an ISO standard

2. As stated before there are additional bits imbedded in the bit stream (error correction, flow control, etc.) But there are platforms and CPUs that do NOT follow the 8/16/32 bit pattern for a byte, word and longword(doubleword). The VAC, for example, has 9 bits in their bytes, 18 bits in a word and 36 bits in a doubleword.

Not to talk about a couple of the super computers in the CRAY family where the least divisible unit is 24 bits wide (so called byte), two such units are 48 bits and 4 such units are 96 bits wide. So shortly put, the word "byte" kind of has different meaning depending on which platform you're on, even though it has been widely known as a 8bit entity.

I won't bore you anymore now ;)
And I'm sure if you look hard enough you'll find an arcane machine that has a different definition of a bit. ;)

One of the things that always got me was how the Japanese console makers (Nintendo, Sega, etc) always referred to the storage capability of their games, memory cards, etc. in MegaBits to make their capability sound greater. I'm suprised they didn't invent the "sub-bit", of which 8 would be required to form a bit, so they could then use a number 8 times larger in describing their product: The New Nintendo 512 features a 512 SubBit Processor and 1+ GigaSubBits of RAM!

Dan East

Last modification: Dan East - 07/02/01 at 04:54:56

Thanks for that formal explanation, Freddy mauler.

So, matt, didn't you say I could go in and fix the new bug? If I can? Of course I wouldn't upload anything to the site without you knowing first, and authorizing.

[EDIT: hehehe]
Last modification: Moose Master - 07/02/01 at 10:21:55
