iPaq screen (blue tint)

iPaq screen (blue tint)

Postby Hunter » Apr 24, 2001 @ 3:29am

I own both a Casio EM-500 and an iPaq 3630. Whilst the iPaq wins in speed, the Casio seems to have the better screen. I've never noticed anyone complaining about the rather washed out blue-tinged colours of the iPaq screen. Is this generally the way iPaq's are, or is there a problem with mine?

4096 colours, yes. But still the screen looks washed out, and the colours have a blue tint to them (maybe this is something to do with the backlight?)

The iPaq uses a reflective display. The sidelight is on the right side of the display, and shines across it. Other LCD displays typically use a backlight, where the light is filtered by the LCD to generate the various colors. Reflective displays have the advantage of benefiting from ambient light, while backlit displays are harder to read with brighter environments. The tint you see is the result of the light shining parallel to the various display layers, which refracts it (probably primarily the touchpad film) much more than with backlight displays, where the light passes through the layers at a perpendicular angle.

Dan East
