Speed / Quality Config Optimizations

Postby Mammoth » Jul 19, 2004 @ 7:59pm

Sorry, but do you mean "nope" to EVERYTHING I asked about, or just "nope" about Quake 2?

Also, I just bought the e805 and see a huge difference in all 2D apps, including super fast web browsing (through built-in wi-fi; almost as fast as my PC on cable now) as well as 2D games like Argentum, but I see absolutely NO difference in performance of either Quake.

I am figuring now, from the standpoint of a relative newbie, that this is because both of Dan's Quake ports that we all have access to were written for the traditional Pocket PC's that never had any graphics hardware onboard, and thus were coded for software rendering only. Am I on the ball with this one?

Finally, I do recall that Dan has been working on another port of Quake I (OpenGL ES), re-coded to use the Imageon 2300 hardware on a 400MHz Xscale device. The test device mentioned in that forum sounds very close to my e805. Is there any download area where I could gain access to this new port in order to test my e805's 3D acceleration capability for the first time?

Thanks any & all who can reply . . .

AFAIK, the Imageon in the e805 can not be used for 3D acceleration of any sort. The speedups in 2D apps you see are from WM2003 more than anything - my 3955 had a huge jump in performance from PPC 2002 to WM2003
holy internets batman.

Thanks so much for the input. The controls on the e805 are SO BAD that I will already be exchanging this PPC for the h4155 at Circuit City today. I'll see how that one goes. I know there's no Imageon in it, but the controls look better. Always gonna miss the free-style joy pad of the h2215; also the CF slot, but oh well, I am the master of returned merchandise. Hehe :D

Only one thing . . . I thought the h2215 was running PPC 2003 AKA WM2003? Was I wrong? . . .

I have an h4155. Fantastic device. Yes, the h2155 runs WM2003...

Oh yes! The h4155 runs Quake MUCH MUCH better than both the e805 AND the h2215! Also, my 2D apps are equally fast to the e805 (and much faster than the h2215). . . well, the h4155 works like a gem in all that I do, so it looks like a keeper.

I'll be sure to post some frame rates as soon as I can (figure out how).

Don't worry about it, we already have a benchmark for it...

Yes, I just realized it's on the first page of the benchmark thread, and it has the highest rank of a non-overclocked PPC.

Okay, I've been futzing with stuff. Right now I added this to the config.cfg:

r_maxparticles "0"
r_waterwarp "0"
d_mipcap "4"
cl_bob "0"
cl_bobup "0"
cl_bobcycle "0"
r_ambient "0"

However, there are two things that REALLY seem to slow down this game:

1. Dynamic lighting. There HAS to be a way to turn this off, or disable it, so it just uses vertex lighting or whatever. The rockets that light up the walls and stuff are just REALLY slowing down how this thing runs.

2. The screen 'flash' when you pick up an item. I don't know why it causes hte game to slow down so much, but it does. It's that white kinda 'flash' that goes over the entire screen.

Feel free to respond with some ideas on how to disable either of these. If they're both disabled I expect to gain at least 1 fps.
