Dell X50 vs Asus 730

Postby Arqentus » Nov 11, 2004 @ 1:10am

A extra bit of comparison:

Hx4700 GAPI: 122.6 f/s
A730: 146.6 f/s
x50v ( with picard's GAPI tweak ): 215 f/s

The tweak increased the GAPI performance by 4.1 times.

What if all 3 had Picard's GAPI tweak?!?

Would it work on all VGA models, or is this tweak device specific?

it's device specific, but the A730 can be tweaked too. check the review: http://www.pocketmatrix.com/reviews/a730/index6.php

great. By the way is this similar to picard's gapi fix?
I read the other website thread and Picard refers to a fix he made for the Asus too.

OOpps, just found out it is Picard's fix!

Also, is 2D scalling possible future fix for Asus as well, or just Dell?

Damm hard to decide between these 2 PDAs!

Nope, the Asus is lacking scaling hardware besides the pixel doubling feature of the LCD controller.

I see no reason in buying the Asus730w if you can get the X50v with more features (minus camera) for less money.

The main reasons besides the camera would be the extra 64mb of ram and the usb host... However after seeing the Toshiba e830 for the first time up-close and personal I think that having a larger VGA screen is important to be able to maximize the productivity of the device.

I have sat down and thought about what one I thought was best suited for me. I have gone for the X50V, the wifi a730 was just taking to long to come out. Even when somthings out in the US it still takes months to get it here in the UK. I was able to order the X50V from dell within a few weeks of it coming out in the US.

Yes and the optional 3rd party ram upgrade is$200 and voids warranty.
Aside from that, only other things slightly better is (from what ive read) the screen, size & battery.
All these reasons should make up for the difference...

screen size was always most ideal at 3.8" but they stopped after Tosh755.
HP4700&Toshe830 are simply to big to be practical for a PDA.

Thanks for the review. If I were choosing between the two, Id have to go with Dell based on ability to stand behind a product.

I returned Axim X30mid & high models twice. Dell replaced them in 2 days, both times. No hassel, just pin connector prob, and they sent me wrong unit once.
Now my kids have excellent working units. Dell is good at returns.

BUT..bottom line for me is, looks count, and for this choice(top-line models) I must go with the better screen, which from my research, is the Asus730.

When Dell increases RAM & Battery, then you will have a "no-brainer" for the price, but when buying a top-line model, we also look at what appeals, rather than price.

Yes they both have strong points that separate them, but..
When reality sets in & you are holding the 2 side by side, in normal PDA use...
My bet is that you will be immediately be attracted to smaller, cuter, camera loaded, "nicer screen" ASUS!

I could say the same for Loox Vs Asus as well!

Not really. The X50v is the same size as the A730 and looks and feels much better imo.
In addition the X50v has the graphics chip going for it, which is a big plus if you are into multimedia and video. For instance you can use the X50v to output video to a projector, which is decoded by the 2700g while the processor is in power saving mode.
Of course there are more advantages like Bluetooth 1.2, Hardware Equalizer (sound) etc.

If the X50V had 128mb of ram, I may have bought that one (the graphics chip has promise for the future). Instead I will get my Asus A730W next week.
My priority was first for work, second for gaming needs.

The RAM was my number one factor, 64mb is just not enough for my uses.
Other ASUS features I will use is:
- USB host, I can transfer files either between peoples usb-ram-keys, or directly from their pc. Very important as I visit people in their offices, I can grab stuff on the fly.
- Camera, I can take images of conference room boards, displays, even paper pages. This is important as currently people scramble to jot down the notes on the boards, very often missing information. Or someone will have a paper copy of something I would like a covert copy of.
- It has been confirmed that Bluetooth and Wifi will run together, which is great as I will be taking notes with the bluetooth keyboard, with the pda in landscape, while connected to the network wirelessly.

I also looked at the Loox, but lack of US support and the iffy camera knocked that off my list.

The cameras on these PDAs/phones are currently just gimmicks. They provide entertainment for a good week or two but then you start to really just how much of a POS they are and that those POSs are getting you banned from select places.

I think that your comment, atleast in regards to the 730's camera is incorrect.

I use an 10mp camera when I want to go out and shoot photographs. However, my camera is now not something I want to carry around with me everywhere. A camera phone with 640k resolution is a gimmick... it's only good for adding friends pictures to the caller id. On the other hand, a 1.3mp digital camera in a pocket pc that you'll carry around everywhere, does have it's uses.

The line I tell a lot of people is that is one of those things that comes in handy when you least expect it. If you're in a fender bender, you want to get pictures of the cars plates and so forth.

The thing that makes it a good idea for a pocket pc is that it's just another method of entering and storing data. You have your contact lists and your calender and your to-do list. Instead of maybe writing down a phone number on a building, you just take a picture of it. Helps save even more time. You're not going to print these, but they are good enough for the web, and certainly good enough to bring them home and put them on your computer and view them on your montior.

Anyone who buys a pocket pc because they want a digital camera isn't buying it for the right reasons. As a secondary method of taking those regular, I just want to show my wife the color of a car, pictures... it's a good idea. But the reason these get banned is because perverts will take these into locker rooms and then upload the pictures right on the to net.........
