As a developer, I can say from experience that it can be extremely difficult to choose an arbitrary date and actually release at that time. There are a hundred different things totally unrelated to the executable itself that crop up - everything from the website, to the installers, to the purchasing agreements and mechanisms, to having a nice press release ready for news sites to post. It's extremely easy to let some of those things slip by with a one-man-show, and even more likely when you have to rely on different people, as is the case with Ag.
So, I think Carpe set a date with good faith, knowing that from his end the product was ready. Any of the hundred "other" things must of cropped up to hold things up at the last minute.
