Accepting PSX adapter Beta Testers

Postby Chad » Mar 31, 2005 @ 2:48pm

-does a little dance for Dan-

Now playing PQuake will be PERFECT! Are you going to seek a patent on it? That may squash some people from copying your idea.

AAA batteries are good. I am tired of spending $1.20 on those stupid CR2032s! (Axim X5 has weird issues with CR2032s and likes draining them)

So will this hopefully be universally supported by games? In the sence that like mlepage said, with low level hardware support to allow for hardware button type emulation?
Possible joystick support?

Oh yeah cost? I figure that since you said "discounted beta tester price" of $25.. I assume $35-40ish?

:) hmm how should my ppc attach to my ps2 controller now....

ok AAA is cool then. approximately how long do they last?

about the auto turn off feature, can that be changed/turned off in the driver too?
some games have incredibly long cutscenes so i dont know if that would be an issue

Can I give you money in exchange for this adapter yet? I don't hang around these forums much, so sorry if I missed the announcement.(I looked but couldn't find one)

I think to make it easy to use with my Axim X5, I'll mount a PSX pad to my thumbkeyboard's front in a way that's easy to remove and probably the transmitter module to the back. That way I can have two accessories with me easily, and the PSX pad seem as more of an extension of the Axim.

As far as I know, there wasnt an announcement of release, though the previous page showed completion of the project.

Im suprised there isnt more interest in this as my x50v has extensive gaming abilities yet no generic universal controller. Some people were all excited about the concept of a bluetooth gamepad and I know that if its bluetooth then ti would be really expensive.. then for pocket pcs... even more expensive. I at least have hope in this that it will be affordable.

I think the major reason why the Axim X50v owners aren't drooling over this PSX adapter is cause they aren't aware of it's existence!

Most Axim owner hang out at www.aximsite.com forums and this project hasn't been mentioned there yett. Maybe Dan could make a post there with a small presentation of the project, I'm sure he'd sell a few of these adapters right away!

This adapter has been mentioned on the Games sub-forum many times. In fact, I think that is where I heard about this adapter in the first place. Most people there seem to hold off excitement, until at least the device is released, and some not until there are good reviews.

Still, an annoucement when orders are accepted would garner a fair number of people from there to purchase one if it was on the main page.

Dan, is there anything that a developer may be interested in with respect to 'extra' functions in your driver? Or should we just allow remapping of functions according to keycodes and be done with it?

At this point my driver is not that mature, so there is no API for accessing the full controller information.

I briefly discussed this with Thierry - the creation of a formal API for handling controllers - but I've been too busy to nail the thing down.

Obviously there's a lot of extra data that a game could utilize, plus it will be easy for me to support multiple controllers with a single adapter (although this first version will only support a single controller). Without an API (or games that specifically support multiple controllers), there would be no way to make use of the additional controllers(s).

8O what does API do?
Sounds like multiplayer support in the context, but API doesnt really sound like it.

And yeah, I primarily go to Aximsite.. whenever people post about controllers, I post the link to this... yet people dont seem to go w00t... So I assume its either the lack of "existance" (come on share a pic.. even one with lotsa duct tape is cool) or they dont see the significance behind it. Significance being they dont see how IR could be used with a pocket pc.

In software development, API is an acronym for Application Programming Interface. An API allows a program to access some external library or hardware. So if I provided an API for my adapter, games could formally connect and talk to my driver, for example to access all 10 buttons, d-pad and dual analog sticks on the controller. The game could also determine what mode the controller is in (analog or digital), access multiple controllers, etc.

LOL dude I've been very interested in Dan's project since the day it began which in 8 days will be an entire year ago and since then the PSP came out........see where I am going? I would have perferred a buggy beta driver at a cost and instructions on how to interface the psx controllers to the pocketpc any day.
