Background

Lejjo, the 3D gelatinous gravity game, is something like I have never seen or heard of before for any platform–PC included. It came out of no where and has a very original approach to the standard puzzle game formula. A genre which normally equates to nothing more than a boring clone. Is Lejjo another horrible entry into the puzzle scene or something more?

Graphics

Lejjo is actually an excellent game graphically–the textures are sharp and crisp.Underneath the game-field is a graphical background. By default, these are space-based backgrounds which rotate with each level. You can also import your own backgrounds as long as they are 256x256 JPEGs. I have yet to import my own backgrounds as I am quite pleased with the default selection. While playing Lejjo, you can expect a nice graphical presentation.

Sound

Lejjo comes with two songs to its soundtrack. As with the backgrounds, you may import your own music. The only set back is that they must be MOD format songs. Personally, I enjoyed the included music and found no need to change them. I did add some MOD files to see how well they worked–and they ran flawlessly. Check out the Lejjo website for more information on how to add your own backgrounds and music.

Gameplay

Lejjo is incredibly refreshing in an industry that has seen too many mediocre games and horrible clones. This game is completely original. The game takes place in a maze viewed top-down.

You use the d-pad to control a 3D cube and maneuver it through a maze to reach the end. Along the way you will find many twists, turns, and surprises. The controls work flawlessly as well. One simply rotates the screen with the d-pad; the cube will always fall down the screen.

There are two game modes: timed and un-timed. I always play un-timed because I generally end up getting stuck in harder, frustrating levels. This is where Lejjo's one serious flaw shows; some levels can become incredibly frustrating. Avoid the harder levels until you have a good grasp on the game's goals and physics.

Lejjo has a gelatinous physics engine. The cube you are guiding through each level acts as though it was a cube of Jell-O (hence the nifty name Lejjo). The physics play a key role in this incredible game.Maneuvering through each level requires pin-point control of your cube. If you hit any obstacles at high speeds, your cube will bounce off at odd angles. This may cause you to careen away from the area you were aiming to get to. After a few levels, you will start to get a feel for how to best control the cube without any gelatinous-related detours.

Some levels allow you the freedom to go as fast as you please. You can bounce all over the place and still complete these levels with time to spare. Others require more finesse and careful planning of your movements.

After completing a few levels, you may think you have Lejjo licked. Then you get into some really fun levels that require the use of various power-ups and keys to unlock barriers. Some power-ups make your cube too big to fit into certain passages, while others shrink it in order to reach areas with hidden keys. This adds some interesting gameplay to an already interesting game.

Lejjo has a built-in level editor, so you can easily make your own levels once you have beaten the original thirty-two. You can also download other user-created levels online. I have tried two custom levels, but one of them caused the game to crash. I have only created one level myself as I have yet to beat a few of the harder levels. However, I encourage everyone to try their hands at creating a few levels and submitting them to the Lejjo site.

Conclusion

Buy this game! I cannot recommend it enough! It is an original, fun game that has a built-in level editor! Head on over to Handango and try it out!

Pros:

  • Original
  • Excellent replay value
  • Built-in level editor
  • Sharp graphics
  • Fun soundtrack

Cons:

  • Can become frustrating on harder levels
  • User-created levels can sometimes crash the game
