Asus A716 Screen Sensitivity

Asus A716 Screen Sensitivity

Postby Raynne » Apr 16, 2004 @ 5:38pm

Is the Asus A716 screen normally not incredibly responsive? I just received my Asus yesterday, and it takes a bit of pressure to get the screen to register taps, which can be quite frustrating since I am used to my Axim, which is pretty sensitive. Will it get better the more I use it?

I haven't had an Axim before so I cannot compare directly, but had some other PPCs before and the A716 feels right in comparison, very responsive to me.

I don't have my A716 right now, but I think its the Screen utility in the Systems tab of Settings. You can re-run the screen sensitivity utility which runs when you first turn on the PDA after a hard-reset, and do so without having to do a hard-reset.

Yep, I think it is just the screen alignment. It is probably just getting used to a new PPC. Thanks everyone.

A716 Screen Sensetivity problems?

Postby Guest » May 3, 2004 @ 9:01pm

Hi everybody,

I just got my A716 and while I am pretty happy with it, I am having problems with sensetivity of screen! :(

The screen does not respond equally over the whole surface! The most lower part of the screen is worse and I have to press harder than the rest of the screen! Is your A716 the same? I know A620 is not, and read another posting with same problem! Could you guys PLEASE write me your experience since I am going to send it in for exchange tommorow!

Another problem I have noticed is that the screen flickers every now and then and especially when the WiFi is activated! Do you experience the same?

Would appreciate your answers.

Make sure your screen is properly aligned. What you may perceive as insensitivity at the bottom of the screen may just be an alignment problem. If you play ScummVM or use a paint program then you can see if the stylus tracks like it should at the bottom of the screen.

By default the a716 will switch CPU clock speed on the fly, depending on how much demand you place on it. When you start up WiFi, etc, the CPU is maxed out while that program loads and does its thing, so the OS switches the CPU up to its maximum speed. When the speed changes dynamically the display sychronization is thrown off for one frame. So the frame may start redrawing what should be the top of the screen part way down instead of at the top of the scan cycle.

If you disable the Automatic Power Saving mode (which dynamically switches CPU speed) then the "problem" will go away. That is in ASUS Settings->System TAB->Mode Tab, uncheck Enable Automatic Mode.

I would think this is something Asus could fix with a ROM or driver update (IE time the CPU speed change to coincide with the VBLANK).
