how to save 256 color bitmaps on a ppc?

how to save 256 color bitmaps on a ppc?

Postby NYIllustrator » Sep 28, 2001 @ 3:50pm

Does anyone know how to save a 256 color bitmap on a ppc? What Im trying to do is edit wolf sprites to put in my maps on my pocket pc, but when i edit the sprite in pocket artist or photogenics it automatically saves it to a 24 bitmap instead of a 256 color one. I tried just downloading it to my desktop then converting it back to 256 from 24 bit in ms paint but this doesnt seem to work when i try to put the image back into the wolf editor. So apparently i need to save it as a 256 color bitmap as soon as I edit it, (no converting) for it to work. So does anyone know how to do this one any of the drawing programs for ppc?

hmmph. I know how to do it programatically. If you 'sync' it, it will conver to a 2bp file, but those are sucky 4bit images. What format is it in? PNG or BMP or what?

Then it needs to be stored in BGR565 format...but how to get it to that without writing code from scratch is beyond me. There might be something out there already that does it...

Try google.

i dont think you understand lemme explain...i open the wolf editor on my desktop pc and export the image file of the sprite i want to edit, for example to nazi guard, and it saves it to my desktoop as a bitmap. I then copy that bitmap file to my ipaq and open it in pocket artist or whatever image program and edit it to what i want the new sprite to look like, but then when i go to save it back to bitmap pocket artist or whatever saves it as a 24 bit bitmap, instead of a 256 color bitmap and there is no option to save a 256 color bitmap that i can see. So then i transfer the file back to my desktop and open it in MS Paint and save it to a 256 color bitmap. Then i try to put it back in wolf but wolf wont take it. However if i do the same exact thing, thats is output the sprite i want to edit from the wolf editor and this time I dont transfer it to my ipaq and instead i just open it in MS paint and edit it, and then save it in MS paint as a 256 color bitmap and put it in wolf it DOES accept it. So i dont know why it works that way but not when i take it off my ipaq and then CONVERT it to 256 color in MS Paint using SAVE AS. So Im figuring you just have to save it to 256 color right after you edit it because thats the only way it works. So what Im trying to say is how do i get pocket artist or whatever graphic program for the pocket pc to do that. any ideas?

randall or 99 might know how to solve this problem since they deal with graphics on the ppc a lot, but randall isnt online right now and 999 is in europe, lol.

ook!

Well, I don't know really. I can only assume that the 24BIT header is different in Paint than in Pocket artist. Photoshop does that too. Most apps read both, but I have had the same problem with Photoshop's version of a 24BIT bmp vs. a Paint version. So...I don't know.

Why not just edit it in Paint? ~

i would but that means i cant edit any of them on my ppc, unless there is a way to get ms paint on there. They released ms paint for older devices on win ce and i tired downloading it and running it but i got a message saying the device connected is not recognized by this program unless there is some way to get that to run on my ppc that i dont know about

Wolfenstein, Doom and Quake all use a fixed 256 color palette. Which means you can only use the colors in that palette (no custom colors).

Photogenics is heavily reliant on high resolution graphics and thousands of colors; it doesn't even bother offering low-end options. Even for TGA and BMP.

I cannot think of a single reason why I would want to use Photogenics to create low-end graphics like that- it would be a huge waste of time and Photogenics is not equipped with the filters and tools anyway.

There are even issues creating a texture for Argentum. Photogenics won't save as an 8-bit TGA.

Just use Wally for creation of all low-end textures, and you'll be safe (screw phtotoshop). Wally isn't available for PPC, so you are stuck creating on your PC.
