TMPGEnc Problems

I just recently started having problems converting .avi to .mpg.  It converts the movie no problem until there's about 10 seconds left and then it just quits.  Of course now the .mpg is 0 bytes and I just wasted 5 hours for nothing.  What I have to do is abort the procedure before it quits and everything is fine then.  I used the software twice before this with no problems but now it's done it a couple of times. <br><br>Does anyone know what the problem is?

I have heard of this once before, but I do not know of a fix. When you get this problem, is it only with one avi file, or different ones?

i was having this problem yesterday... i changed the temporary file to a different partition that had more free space on it... you can change the temp file in the option->environmental setting menu.  tell me if that fixes your problem... this pissed me off when it happened to me too... i was 99% done.... grrr.<br><br>also update to the latest tmpgenc version... (www.tmpgenc.com)... that might help too.

Thanks for the ideas guys and I'll try them out.  I've only been working with one .avi file (Gladiator) trying to figure out how I can fit it on my 340 microdrive.  It's my 1st time trying it with your awesome How 2.<br><br>On a different topic I wonder if you can help me out.  In order to squeeze Gladiator down I had to use low quality for video and medium for audio (@ 301 MB and I copied about 150 minutes.  I found that each quality (low, medium, high) adds ~100 MB.  Can I turn this around and use medium for video and low for audio and will it come out near the same?  Is mono sound that much of a difference with the iPaq?  I'm a total beginner with this stuff so I've been using the how 2 pretty much to the letter.  <br><br>Thanks for all the help because I really need it.

i just ripped gladiator yesterday ....<br><br>i used the following settings<br><br>Video:<br>quality: 40<br>max 245kbit/sec<br>min 0kbit/sec<br><br>Audio:<br>64kbit/sec<br>Mono<br>32000Hz<br><br>I also cut the credits at the end off, and the a bit at the beginning (universal studio's little animation stuff, etc).<br><br>go to settings, advanced and check off "Source range" than double click on it...<br>my start frame was: 1381<br>my end frame was: 267078<br>audio gap: 0ms<br><br>try that out and you should end up with a 332mb file... i used full screen mpeg...<br>320x136.. i clipped off a few pixels from the top and bottom that were just black borders left over from flask..... i did that by going to settings, advanced, and checking off "clip frame" and changing top and bottom to 4 (left and right remain 0). than click ok. go back to the video tab and change your output size to 320x136.<br><br>tell me how it ends up.<br>

Thanks alot Chris!!!<br><br>One more thing (I hope!) - I'm going to try Crouching Tiger and I want to do it in Mandarin w/ subtitles.  Can you tell me how to get the subtitles in it?  I looked all over in FlaskMPEG (I read it in a previous post) and I can't seem to find it anywhere.<br><br>Thanks again for all of your help.  It's absoutely amazing what can be done with these handhelds.

You have to choose subtitles and the audio track during the ripping phase, with such a program as CladDVD. Make sure you choose the right audio track as well, the CTHD DVD defaults to English with no subtitles, Mandarin is probably the SECOND choice, along with subtitles in a seperate category, probably the first choice for english subtitles.
