Cabinstall is one of the best freeware apps around. I associated it with .cab files.
Personally, I alwyas try to get the cab file of anything I'm trying to install. It's much cleaner, and doesn't leave crap on my desktop.
Jub: I had the same problem a while back with my Dell Axim, but it got stolen, so it was never really fixed.
