GDC PARTNERS WITH CG SOCIETY TO LAUNCH GRAPHIC IMPACT ART COMPETITION
Gallery and Awards Ceremony to Take Place During 2006 Game Developers Conference
SAN FRANCISCO - January 12, 2006 - The Game Developers Conference (GDC) and The CGSociety (CGS) are supporting the future of professional original game art with the launch of the Graphic Impact art and animation competition. Finalists will display their creations during the entire week of GDC, which will take place March 20-24, 2006 at the San Jose Convention Center in San Jose, Calif. Winners will be announced during a VIP Reception on Thursday, March 23, at the San Jose Fairmont hotel.
With the arrival of next-generation consoles and advanced techniques, artists are now capable of creating film-quality imagery. For the first Graphic Impact competition, dubbed The Pivotal Moment, contestants are asked to submit an image, animation and story that illustrate a crucial moment between the antagonist and protagonist.
"Through this inaugural competition, GDC and the CG Society aim to promote the professional development and recognition of the art and artists of games," Jamil Moledina, GDC director, said. "We are excited to focus on rewarding excellence in original art, since that dovetails with the focus of the GDC to provoke creativity in all elements of game creation."
"We have created an exciting competition that focuses on the pivotal moment in a game story," Mark Snoswell, CG Society President, said. "We are thrilled to host this competition and look forward to receiving entries in the three categories:
Commercial, Team and Individual. The CGSociety is the largest group of digital artists in the world and this is the first time we have focused on the games community specifically. We are pleased to do this with the GDC, the leading game developers' conference in the world."
All entries will be reviewed by a judging panel consisting of influential industry members from companies such as Midway Games, DreamWorks Animation and Oddworld Inhabitants. Six finalists will be sponsored to travel to San Jose and attend the GDC where they will receive additional prizes.
