Which Pocket PC should I buy?

Which Pocket PC should I buy?

Postby gilman824 » Apr 18, 2006 @ 5:45am

Hey, I've had a pocket pc (toshiba e310) for 2-3 years now and it's time to upgrade. Besides having an old model, it has some issues anyway (d-pad is nearly destroyed and due to a scratch, the screen has alignment problems). I'm hoping I can list some of the things important to me in my next pocket pc and someone could reccomend one for me, thanks in advance.

Besides the basic features in a pocket pc; schedule, contacts, word proccessing, etc, there are a few other things I am interested in.

My toshiba e310 was never a very good gaming machine. First off, the d-pad is very weak and because of this, is not good for action games. After using it heavily for some time, it has basically broken, I can blaim that partially on me but for my next pocket pc, I'm hoping for a less delicate d-pad. Also, the toshiba e310 will not allow for simultaneous button presses. For example, if I were playing a game like mario and I were holding forward and the run button, while running, I would not be able to jump. This is a problem when playing action games. Due to both of these issues, I was basically limited to RPG's and games that did not require fast reactions or simultaneous button presses. I believe there also was some delay in button presses, which again prevented me from playing many action games. So, I would like the capability of simultaneous button presses, a strong d-pad and less delay for button presses to register.

In my new pocket pc, I'd want the ability to play action gameboy and NES games. Playing SNES games would be a bonus, but I'm not sure how the emulation of SNES has evolved since I last checked up on it, so I don't know how reasonable this is.

Currently, I am using my pocket pc as an mp3 player. I'd like to continue doing so, the only improvement in this area I'd like is maybe battery life. Currently, I believe I can get about four hours of battery while listening to music on my toshiba e310. I'm not sure if that is an average time or if my battery is deteriorating, but in any case, a longer battery life would be great.

That is basically it I think. I don't know what a reasonable budget is for this, but I think I'd like to keep the price at $300 max. That may change though. Thank you.

one thing about the axim is the bluetooth. Not all the functionality is included...

if battery runtimes are important you may want to have a look at some of the iPAQs or Fugitsu Seimens loox devices

I've just looked a bit at the loox, but after more research, I'm leaning towards the Axim. It seems to me that the battery life will suit me in most situations. Also, I've just discovered battery extenders today, so if I do need more battery life on a long trip or something, there is a solution.
