JS Landscape 2 - First Looks

JS Landscape 2 - First Looks

Postby Chris Edwards » Mar 4, 2001 @ 4:36pm

I downloaded JS Landscape 2 (beta) yesterday. Here are my first impressions:
Pro's
. 360x480/480x360 resolution!
. Speed seems the same
. Easy install
. Easy interface
Con's
. Writing is sometimes small
. Most apps don't use the whole screen

Overall JS Landscape 2 rocks! Adjust the font size in Internet Explorer if the text is too small when you are browsing.

Is anyone else having problems with WISbar using this? Every time I switch modes, I must reselect my WISbar background image! Also.. I must re-align everytime I switch also.

I am having the same problems with WISBar, which is unfortunate... I would love to use both, but have gone back to using Landscape 1.1

I would say the author of WISbar (and other similar utils that don't work right with the extended display modes) will be quick to adapt their software so it works appropriately.
This new landscape software is just what Palm needed - another demonstration of how pitiful their hardware is compared to the Pocket PCs.

Dan East

Well, I finally downloaded JS Landscape, and I'm pretty impressed. It works (and looks) as I imagined it would. As has been said, many apps do not use the extended screen area (to my fellow programmers, please practice good programming technique and always respond to WM_SIZE messages, and get display params from GetSystemMetrics instead of hardcoding them!!).

When running in landscape:
Neither the default calculator or Eval (a free scientific calulator) is usable. I doubt there is a single calculator that can be used in landscape mode.
I was disappointed that the Picture Viewer software does not take advantage of the expanded screen. It will use whatever height is available, but the width is hardcoded at 240. It would be very cool to be able to view pics from my digital camera at the high resolutions!
As has been said, Wisbar does not work quite properly (I also doubt any skinnable program will look quite right). If anyone hears of an updated WISBar that works with the new display modes please post here (or create a news entry on this site).
What is also needed is a SIP that will adjust to fit the available area.

All in all, this program is definitely worth $9.99 (the price is supposed to go up to $14.99 on the March 15th, so if you're remotely interested get it now).

Dan East
