Cordfull modem search

Cordfull modem search

Postby Moose or Chuck » Apr 1, 2001 @ 10:22am

I need a Compact Flash modem for my Casio, not wireless. Analog, so I can plug it into a telephone jack. I'd also prefer if it had a 10/100 network interface as well, but it's not needed. Does anyone have any ideas. At this point, price doesn't matter, but I'm looking for something under $200, otherwise I'll need to get a job at my local Publix. Thanks for any help. It doesn't have to be name brand, like 3Com, as long as it works. I'm not expecting the fastest modem for my PocketPC, just so I can go online wherever a phone jack is.Last modification: Moose Master - 04/01/01 at 07:22:49

If you can hold off on getting one for a few months, you'll be happy you did. The v.92 modems are out already for desktops, but PCMCIA and CF version are still to come. What's so good about them? The connect time is supposed to take only a few seconds after the number has been dialed and upload speeds (sending files) are to be increased.<br><br>In the meantime you can check out the modems offered by Pretec, Hawking Technology, Targus, and others. I don't know of any combo ethernet/modem cards, by the way.Last modification: SonicSilicon - 04/01/01 at 08:54:42

I didn't know the v.92 modems were out yet, I'll have to look into those too.<br>I saw the Targus one for 115, an extremely similar one (in appearance) by a no name was 95, 20 less.<br>999, I'm sure you know of some good gadgets, speak up.

all i know is that the Pretec one sticks out way too far. the CF one with the RJ-11 cord is much better, ill get back to this post on the names.

I like my pretec one, It works fine for me and seems reasonably fast... of course I hardly use it because I mostly connect wirelessly, but all of the CF modems "power saving features" suck and will drain your battery in 1hour or less, no joke.  You might want to look into one of the 56k serial/propreitary modems, like casios.  I've heard the battery usage on those is pretty minimal.
