I wrote to Pocket PC Mag asking what went wrong and, to their credit, they did hold their hands up and admit that they had made mistakes. If this awards thing happens again, however, I don't think I'll be too quick to accept their offer to help out with the judging...

For another example of completely bonkers results, last time I checked, Pocket PC Thoughts was losing the News Sites category to Dave's Compaq iPAQ. No disrepect to the latter, but it's not in the same league as Pocket PC Thoughts, not even close.

I'd love to hold a super-huge vote on my site to allow everyone to vote for their favourite games, but I have a few fears:

Actually implementing the polls (presumably, you would divide the games up according to genre) would be a nightmare.

For example, Pocket Quake is technically still only in beta. Should it and other beta games be included? What happens if a developer doesn't agree?

I can also see major disagreements brewing over the genre of many games. Now, I wouldn't put PQ under RPG, but there would be quite a few games who fit into more than one category, or whose genre wouldn't be clear.

Oh, and from recent experience (hehe), I've found that polls like these have far too much potential to cause trouble... :)

Yada yada.. i think we should have a preliminary vote to ask if Betas should just be included with all of the rest of the games, or if betas should be seperated. I'll cast my vote, betas should be included, since most of them will never be updated.

See the mess going on between Pocket PC Thoughts and Dave's iPaq over these awards? Sheesh. I've never even been to Dave's iPaq site before. It took over a minute before the page would display loading as fast as my 56k modem could go.
One thing I'm glad to see these days is that more and more news sites (including the biggies like ABC, etc) are simplifying their pages. It should be obvious that simpler pages = less bandwidth = save $.

Dan East

i guess pocketmatrix is saving a lot of money... I was suprised that pocketmatrix wasn't nominated as an online community for pocket pc owners.

So, are we (you) doing a "peoples election" or not?

I've read the Awards nominees and there's lot of good stuff missing, with some really stupid ones thrown in.
It would be nice to do an "open" election, where you don't have to choose from a list. You just put the name of the site/program you feel is the best in that category.

Anything like this will just be a big can of worms. Reviews and ratings are one thing, voting for "the best" is something else.

Dan East

And what about the "open election" (for lack of a better discription)? I know it would be big, but it would only be a matter of separating and counting the votes on each category. Their should be consensus on the categorys beforehand, though.
