external modem and my ipaq

is it possible to connect an old 14.4 external serial modem to ipaq with the serial activesync connector? ive got a male to male adapter so i can connect the two but it doesnt work (could this be from my male to male adapter being a straight through and not crossover?)

You need a null modem adaptor or cable.
