Catching up...

So I've been out of the loop for a while, and I don't know if this jazz has been addressed in a previous post; but since I'm too lazy to scroll through it all, I'm asking again.

When the hell is PocketPC going to start doing some progressive stuff? I'm sure everyone's seen that new Treo from Handspring. Now, granted, I'm a Palm convert, and I'd never go back to a Palm for the sake of its PDA abilities. But really - to have ONE to carry around is where things are going.

Is there ANY movement in this direction for PocketPC-based hardware? I've heard about phone attachments for PocketPC's, and things of this nature, but when are we going to see a cell phone with PocketPC software/hardware?

Anyone have any idea? I'm just upset with myself for being tempted to purchase the Treo...

Again, I apologize if this has been addressed already. Party on, Wayne.

Hmm, you really must've been out of touch for a while. :) The whole concept for using the PPC technology for phones was being used by Microsoft, WAAY before Palm-related companies jumped on the bandwagon. There are currently 2 types of PPC-based smartphones:
1. Modified versions of PPCs with in-built phone hardware.
2. Specially-designed phones, using MS's new smartphone operating system.

For the first type, devices have been available for quite a while (in the Uk at least). The Trium Mondo, Siemens SX45, Sagem WA3050 were released about 6 months ago, but imho are considered first-generation devices of this type, as they used greyscale (for battery life) screens, PocketPC2000 and were bulkier than normal PPCs. We're now seeing devices like O2's XDA, Jornada 928, etc which are smaller and are designed for good usability as phones, unlike first-gen devices
The second type uses Microsoft's Stinger platform, designed specifically for phones. While none have been released quite yet, several have been in development for a while (notably the Sendo Z100) and are scheduled for release shortly.

I run a phone shop, and can guarantee than none of the palm-based phones can even compare to the PPC equivalents. My personal favourite is the O2 Xda, which is sleek & slim and is a pleasure to use as a phone. It's not readily available yet due to it's very recent introduction but, IMHO, batters any equivalent. Even if, for some reason, i didn't like the MS-based phones, i would still consider the excellent symbian-based alternatives before even looking at a palm-based device.

BTW Check this link for PPC-based mobiles: !

Oooh, it's a Palm! It can make phone calls! ...It's still crap! :)

Hey T1, I don't think you're gonna see a Z100 by the end of the month at your shop like you have previously mentioned... I've been in contact with Sendo, and apparently they haven't even started sending these out to publishers yet for review... I'm "on the list" for one.. so it's time to get an arrangement with a local service provider to provide me access to the network with that phone....
