NIC issues

NIC issues

Postby Kzinti » May 16, 2002 @ 4:11am

I've got my hand on a Socket NIC. At my job it worked flawlessly. I could sync tons of data in a few sec.

Now I'm at home and nothing seems to work... I get "PC contacted. Locating connection agent. Please wait..." Fun thing is I get this message even when specifying a non-existing computer name for the connection.

From the following:
http://www.microsoft.com/mobile/pocketp ... yncnet.asp

It seems I need to install a WINS server on my XP machine (I'm using Pro). Any idea how to do this?

Anyone have experienced similar problems?

By the way, I'm using a Linksys router and all port filtering is disabled.

I managed to get it working with the static host utility mentionned on the web site...

So basically I only need to know how to install the WINS service on my XP PRO PC. (My PC IP is dynamic).

"PC contacted. Locating connection agent. Please wait..." is the most absurd status message I have probably ever seen. It can magically contact your PC even if your PC is turned off.

Your XP box should be running a WINS server already (at least NT 4.0 / 2000 do automatically). Just specify your PC's IP address in the WINS field of your NIC config. [edit] I just reread your post and see your PC IP is dynamic. Do you have your own hub? How are you connecting your PPC into the network? Does your PC have to use a dynamic IP address on the network your PPC is on?

If you have the same or similar Socket card as I have, there is an icon at the bottom right of the screen. Tap it and it will tell you it's IP, if it has one. Check that.

I had trouble at home until it dawned on me to adjust my Blackice settings on the host I wanted to contact.

I downloaded a free utility called VXUTIL from www.cam.com/windowsce.html . It gives you all kinds of useful things, (like ping) , so you'll have some troubleshooting tools.
