Ordered the E740

Postby Ainvar » Jun 15, 2002 @ 10:47pm

I got the e740 today. Had to d/l the USB drivers for the e310 to get it to connect correctly with XP pro.

First impressions: Sweet design, very sturdy feeling, nice overall performance. WiFi is a little weak but I think I need to give it a good testing. Tried PockedGB but it did not like the [home] button for firing kinda qwerky. I have noted all the apps load up quicker and things refresh faster. I have not tried any Divx movies or normal movies just yet.

I think I shall keep this device. After more testing and messing with it I will give the final choice as to keep it or return it. I have 14 days.
Note to self: Why don't you ever listen to me?

Just picked one up tonight at the CompUSA in Novi, Mi. My E200 had problems with the SD slot so I cashed in my extended warranty for an E740. My first impressions: if this wasn't an exchange and I didn't already have another PocketPC (iPAQ), I would return the E740 the next day.

There is some banding on the screen when viewing pictures versus the beautiful E200 screen I just gave up. Apps and games run a tad slower versus the HP568 iPAQ, and E200. Some very slow, some decent enough to not ruin the gameplay. For those wanting to upgrade to an x-scale PocketPC don't bother. The current crop of PCC are just fine. MS and Toshiba really screwed up with this one.

What I do love about this is the form factor. To some it is ugly and I can see why but for me it is just right. And the WiFi is a nice option to have without having to take up the CF slot.

And when was the speed issue with the E740 fixed Moosemaster? Can you please post the thread where someone has a more recent E740 model with the problem fixed. I have been keeping up with Pocketmatrix, pocketpcpassion, sprinklerhead, brighthand, and no one has said their E740 is just as fast or faster than the current PPCs. I know there are some posts about the other x-scales not having problems but until the PPC community and test those machines I don't believe it. Again, please post where you got this information if you can. I will take my E740 back for a "more recent" model. Thanks.

Moosemaster, thanks. I remember hearing about the delay of the other x-scale devices because of this problem. The way it sounded in your reply a later batch of E740's came out with the problem fixed.

Personally, I don't think an x-scale will come out this year running at spec speeds, not unless MS fixes the software compatibility issues. Hopefully this delay includes these fixes.
