TMPGEnc encodes MPEG1/2's. It does not encode DivX (MPEG4) files. You will need virtual dub to do that.

http://virtualdub.sourceforge.net/
well i've been making divx's with it - go to 'output to file' - that seems to do it.

still, i'll be using virtual dub from now on.

i think an avi is just a video file with a .avi ending but it may not be encoded with divx - it might be video for windows or something.

you have to change the compression settings in the video menu and select the divx codec

I did that...lets see I encoded a video that is 2 minutes and 39 seconds. I had a 179 kb/s video rate, and i had the frames decimated by 2. I used Mpeg 3 audio, 48 kb/s with 22050 hz, stereo. It is 240 by 352

the file that came out was about 7 and a half megabytes...

shouldn't it be smaller?

Hmm well, try to lower your audio setting a little and do a custom decimate by 4, also use double pass video. I have encoded an 80 meg fatboy slim mpeg into 4 meg at 240x320 and 32l sound or somthing.
