I just got off the phone with Toshiba, regarding my e740. I sent my device in last week, and they honored the recall (backup battery disconnected resulting in lost data).
However, they announced to me that the screen is cracked and the battery contacts are broken. So they want to charge me $179 to fix it. The device was fine when I sent it to them, I have no idea what happened during the shipping/fixing process.
Before I shipped the device in the box Toshiba provided, I took photos of it, mostly so I had record of the serial numbers. Regrettibly, I only have one photo of the front, clearly showing the screen is NOT cracked.
Furthermore, this device is rarely used and looks brand new. There has never been a scratch protector installed on the screen, but it is in pristine condition. Not a scratch to be seen. Its mostly been stored in a padded case, and that case is stored in a plastic box. Along with all my other PDAs. 2 of those PDAs are Casio e-125s which still run perfectly fine and still hold a battery charge.
As for the battery contact being loose on the e740, I have no idea. I never remove the battery. But even if I had, considering this devices lack of use, there shouldn't be any problems there either.
I refuse to pay for the fixes. I paid almost $500 for this device, and another $100 for the ATI attachment. It was in fine condition when I sent it to Toshiba.
So I propose that we come up with an ingenious method of destroying this device. I will make a saga of this, with photographs. Kind of a Mr. Bill thing (if you ever saw those Saturday Night Live sketches). If anyone has any ideas, they will be greatly appreciated. Please pass this on to your fellow PDA buddies, and other websites as I would like to accumulate alot of ideas of destruction, and [hopefully] post them as a feature/parody here at PocketMatrix. The best ideas will get credit.
This isn't intended to make any particular statements AGAINST Toshiba, although I will not purchase a product from them again. I just think this is the best use of something that is otherwise junk, and we can have fun with it. Its not something we can do every day.
