5GB HDD on an iPaq 3950

5GB HDD on an iPaq 3950

Postby Solarix » Sep 6, 2002 @ 9:38am

I was doing some cost analysis and decided that I really need some more memory for my iPaq 3950. I have a shit load of music vid on my puter (over 550) and have started to rip em to DivX to put on my PPC. Looking around, I found that to get a 256 stick of SD mem would run me close to $200 bucks. Alot of cash, for only a mediocre amount of memory.

Conversly, I found an eBay seller that is selling Kingston 5GB PCMCIA HDD for $129... brand new, factory sealed (OEM). And then to get a PC Card sleeve would run me about another $100 (min) off of eBay.

The question is do PCMCIA hard drives, suffer the same problems as the IBM (Iomega) MicroDrive?. Since I would have the extra battery in the sleeve, would I notice a major, if any battery loss, compared to my device with the internal battery alone? And finally, ripping a DVD to DivX, and playing it back off of that device, would I have any problems due to the much slower speeds of a hard drive vs. solid state memory?

Ohhhh yea your going to notice a battery drop. A BIG one. I have 256MB CF for $80 btw, about 11 music videos on there, less than 10mb a piece, and 100+ MB of games/programs, etc

So there would be a huge battery drop even witht he extra battery on the sleeve? I do kinda wish that the iPaq had built in CF since that memory is alot cheeper and they have larger than 256MB available.

I don't know specifics, but you will notice a big drop, especially with videos being loaded off of there often.
