for some reason on the first mission my ship keeps losing life... even if I'm just hovering in one place not touching any of the astroids I die.

I believe that's supposed to happen... that's why the guy makes you go back to the main station to get fixed up after collecting 10 boxes.

Yup, the area is contaminated with radioactive stuff.. which is mentioned in the brief description of the mission and the email from misison hq.

Its amazing qhat kind of stuff you find when you actually read.
