First of all, I am ordering a Dell in about a week, but I would be happy to tell you why one would choose the Asus over the Dell.
1. VGA Screen: VGA simply refers to the resolution. A QVGA screen (which is what most pocket pc's use, including the dell) is 320 pixels by 240 pixels. A VGA screen is twice that in each direction, 640x580, so one could think of it as four times the resolution.
2. Dual Slots: The Dell is only equiped with a Secure Digital slot, while the Asus is equiped with a Secure Digital slot AND a Compact Flash slot. This means that the user can use two peripheral cards at once, such as a memory cards and a GPS card, etc. Many people like this so that they can always have extra memory in the Secure Digital slot, but still be able to use their add-ons in the Compact Flash slot.
3. Camera: The Asus offers a digital camera built-in, to take pictures and such, which the Dell does not. No further explaination is necessary here.
4. Owner Loyalty: This fourth item does not necessarily apply to you or me, but it is most likely part of the reason why many are going to flock to the Asus over the Dell. The members of this forum love Asus handhelds. Ever since the advent of the A620, much of the posts on this forum are about it and how great it is. It is essentially tied with the Dell X3, the model that the X30 is based on. They also like it because of good gamming controls, however don't look at this as a positive for the A730, because they are entirely different.
5. Service and Support: Justin, the person who runs Pro Portable, is active on these forums making for extremely good and personal service. He is always willing to help people out with their questions, and act as a liaison between forum members and Asus. Typically, if a forum member who purchased an Asus product through Pro Portable approaches Justin with a problem, question, or other concern, it is always resolved in some way.
Well, I hope I have helped you out. Let's remember, though, the Asus listed for $500 does NOT included Wi-Fi, which the Dell does. In your decision process, take a look at the five items listed above. Are you willing to trade $150 of your money and Wi-Fi to get those? If yes, go for the Asus, if no, go for the Dell. Hmmmm... I'm bored and have nothing to do, let's list a few things that the Dell has going for it:
1. Price: $150 cheaper, this is obvious.
2. 802.11B wireless: Well, if you don't know what VGA means, you won't know what this means. This refers to wireless networking. This means that you can connect to your home, office, campus, coffee shop, etc. wireless network to surf the internet and such.
3. 21 Day Total Satisfaction Period: I am not sure of Justin's return policy, so this may or may not be relevant. With Dell, if you receive their product and do not like it for ANY reason, you can return it for a full refund, minues shipping charges, within 21 days. Having a policy like this makes me feel much more comfiterable in making purchases like this.
4. Comple Care Accidental Damage Service ($20 extra): Pocket PC's and especially the LCD screens that the bear are EXTREMELY fragile. I am sure that many of the people on this forum, including myself, have broken an LCD screen at some point. If you purchase this $20 warrenty, if your PPC gets hurt in any way which is not intentional, such as leaving it in your pocket, bumping into something and breaking the screen, or any of the other mishaps that could happen to such a fragile little device, Dell will replace this. In my opinion, not only does this give me overall piece of mind in owning the device, it would allow me to take it with me a lot more places. Many times I choose to leave my Pocket PC at home due to fear of it getting damaged. With this Dell warrenty, you no longer have to have that fear, because if something happens to it, Dell will repair or replace it.
5. Faster Processer (624 MHz Dell vs. 520 MHz Asus): Obviously a faster processor typically yields better performance in gamming, multimedia stuff, etc.
Well, I sure I have left something out, but the five points I have listed for each are about it. Good luck in your decision process, I know I have certainly made my decisions. Both of my current Pocket PC's are on ebay in anticipation of ordering the Dell as soon as they sell.
