Buying a PocketPC for the first time, Help me!

The EM is a big tease when it comes to RAM, but danm, they sure are cool to play games on (ones that run fast enough).

I had a go with Rayman at E3 on the EM and it responded very much a Gameboy, which says a lot for a portable device. The iPAQ unfortunately still reminds you that you're playing on a PocketPC, because of it's input limitations, whereas the EM is only limited by it's clock speed (up to 180mhz) and available RAM.

Being a speedfreak myself, I went with an iPAQ and continue to appreciate the investment to this day. It's over a year old now, and I'm running the same OS shipped with new iPAQs thanks to it's flashable ROM. I'm also in the midsts of getting it's RAM upgraded to 64megs internally, yet another facet which will keep my investment current for another year or so :) :)

[sub]Latest Rumor- By inserting PC150 RAM into the iPAQ it's presumed that you can effectively overclock to 250mhz. This works in the same manner as overclocking a PIII600e, where you bypass the locked multipliers with faster RAM to attain a higher Mhz.[/sub]

Matt:

I'm pretty sure it's in the thread you started on Brighthand asking if it's possible to OC the iPAQ farther than 236Mhz via a hardware setting.

Some dude answered and posted Strong Arm info from Intel stating that it can infact accept faster RAM.

Everyone is putting PC133 RAM inside their iPAQs, noone has put PC150 in yet. I think it would require Jimmy to rerelease his OC proggy tho, to enable 240-250Mhz.

999, Jimmy would not have to release a new version. Well, depending on how his program is programmed. Whether it just changes the clock multiplier or the actual frequency of the CPU. If it's just clock multiplier editting then instead of 133 x 1.8 it would be 150 x 1.8 (meaing a possible 270MHz). I'm betting that that iPaq would heat up really quickly and the battery would drain twice as fast, though.

I don't think the battery would drain twice as fast, you're only slightly increasing the voltage.

Besides, what I'm after is the *ability* to do this, it doesn't mean I'd run that way all the time. That said, I can just plug in my Battery Extender, overclock to 250+ and fire up Quake :)

It does make sense now that Jimmy won't need to update his software since all he's tweaking is the voltage.
