I just read an interview with the Fade team as reported on PocketGamer. It looks like these people were just out of touch with the whole Pocket PC community. Fade was the first Pocket PC software they had ever written. An excerpt indicating how out of touch they are:
What advise would you give to other developers hoping to release games/apps on the Pocket PC?

DO NOT MAKE BIG PROJECTS!! this market is really too young, try to think of a game that take 2-3 month is ok if you are not a lot
We had a big disapointement with the sales of fade especially for the amount of work, people tend to prefer simplier game that don't waste too much of their time (well that's a guess about why it failed)
Anyway we are having that in mind for our future product...
Also Try to find a good protection system ,Fade had none, and it was one of the game the most heavily pirated (of what we heard)

The amount of time it takes to win the game is not really a factor at all (unless it is too easy to beat).
Also, due to the simplistic coding that would have been involved in this game, and the small amount of resources (processor speed, etc) required to run it, they would have been much better off using Flash or some other portable language, so they could at least market to other platforms.

Dan East
