Well, the other "Legal" way of getting ROMs is to go out and actually buy the cartridge. Then you are free to download it off the net, since you have paid the money to play said game, so you are technicly not stealing it.

And also, I've always heard that if you are allowed to keep the game that you have downloaded on your system, as long as its not kept on for more than 24 hours.

Everything that Solarix said is complete BS. You can't download any ROMs legally. The distribution method is what's illegal, not ownership rights.

And the 24 hour thing is simply, totally, and outright false.

Well excuse me Moose. It is perfectly within your legal rights to get a backup copy of a game that you own. So in the event that your original copy becomes damaged, you do not need to pay again for another copy of the same thing. If it was completly illegal to distribute ROMs through the net, then I think that most of the sites out there would have been shut down a long time ago. The same thing goes for Audio & Data CD's. Thats why I think that new "Anti-Piracy Protection" is a rip off, cause I keep all my CD's ripped to my computer so I can put them in a playlist of however big I want it. If making backup copy's of Software was then illegal, then you wouldnt be able to purchase the Hardware to transfer the Cartridges game data to your computer.

Try to think before you speak Moose

If you game is damaged you send it back in and get a new one.

The point of the law is the means of distribution. It is ILLEGAL to transfer copyrighted material in such a way, regardless of whether you own the game or not. It is not an authorized means of transfer.

If you want to go read the DMCA and argue with me then fine, but otherwise there's no point and I'm through.

The DMCA law was bought though.. so that ruins the validity of that argument, even a little bit.

Maybe it still is illegal, but the IDSA will NOT go after individual leechers, especially if they own the games. And many games are unsupported, and many more are out of business. So what do you do then, huh? Bend down and get screwed again for finding some eBay auction or bargain bin and have to buy it again?
holy internets batman.
