Well if it's just going to be used as an external controller (a la the picture above), a PSX controller is a much better idea, since then you only have controller parts and not other hardware to deal with (a screen, CPU, etc)

Yeah but if you use the psx controller idea, you're really straying away from the whole "portable" concept. You've moved from one handheld unit with a controller, screen, hardware, etc all in one to two separate units, which makes a huge difference. Where are you going to put the PPC while you are playing? You may say some kind of stand, but now youve limited your playing options to locations with a table. How are you going to comfiterably play on, say, a bus? in a car? in class? on a bench? you get the idea.... The whole psx idea strays away from the original idea of the project too much, and the whole idea of portable video games.

If the keyboards for the A620 weren't so expensive, I would get one and use the components inside to hack the GBA buttons into being a few of the keyboard keys. It all seems feasible, but it requires the $90 keyboard along with a GBA (broken or not).

If I had more experience with programming drivers and designing a circuit for the buttons I would try that route.

Essentially, we just want something similar to the attachable gamepads the iPaqs have, right?

Edit: Oops, I thought the iPaq had a controller that connected to the sync port and the combination was held as one piece like a gameboy. I think I am getting that mixed up with one that Palms had.

Sony did something similar to what I was thinking for their Clie.

Here is Sony's add-on controller. It slides over the keyboard portion of the clie and has a cable that connects to the sync port.

Something like this for the A620 would be great.
