IR capabilities

Postby Colin R. » Sep 20, 2001 @ 6:09pm

One thing I have always thought would be cool was if something could be created using the IRDA on Pocket PC's for measuring. I have minimal knowledge on how this works, but if it was able to send a beam, have that beam bounce back, and then determine the distance the beam traveled (like RADAR). I know this would work for only a few feet, but it would be cool to have.

I dont think that would work. Not sure IF it will be reflected and if it was, it would be to weak to be recognozed by the sensor. Sorry. Cool idea though!

I'm not sure how many of you had a Win CE 2.0 device (I had the Jornada 430se) but there was a "tricorder" pocket C app for that which was basically colored lights and animations to resemble LCARS. Very simple but a good waste of time. Star Treker was a game I had on my Win3.1 system that I found a disk of share and free ware. Oh the hours of play on that. The one that is for the PPC that was refered to earlier just doesn't capture the fun that I had on my 3.1 system.

Casio puts out a watch with a surface temperature reader. Sends out a beam and reads surface temp with it.

The BIG problem is getting down and dirty with the IR port...which is a HUGE pain in the ass, since it is different on all devices. I will have to see what 2002 does in this regard. Though the range issue is a big one.

Ah, an IR applet/plugin would be cool, but in my opinion, even if it were possible, it would be difficult, and the TricorderOS app would then end up costing $30... Try to keep it under $25, please... also, I know that you basically stomped on the idea, but SH3 Would be nice... (Seeing as how my primary PPC is a 548, and my iPAQ is a useless dustball in my bottom drawer) SH3, please?

hmmph...I BARELY STARTED CODING IT!

It'll probably be free...and I promise to put up beta's as I develope, provided that Chris lets me put it up here...

As for SH3, I think I may even do ARM only what with 2002 being ARM only...I don't know. Right now it's MIPS only, as that is all I have to test it. I'll do some builds for SH3 and ARM, send 'em to you guys if you want, and you can let me know if they work? k?
