Contest was good - here's a tweak idea

Postby Benny » Feb 27, 2005 @ 4:01pm

Hey - I also entered the contest and had fun. People should stop complaining... in particular, the rules said that the concept was being judged rather than skill. "PDA head and laptop jacket man" was hilarious and I find no fault with the judges' decision.

One of the reasons I didn't bother with the second part of the contest (putting a banner somewhere) was the idea that valid entries would be randomly drawn... so even if you work hard to do a crazy public banner stunt, there's little incentive for competition. May I suggest a similar "publicity stunt" contest that involves judging as opposed to random draw?

of "sob stories" and crazy people

Postby Benny » Feb 28, 2005 @ 6:13pm

RE: liability
Yeah a valid concern - but perhaps a few checks and balances could be expressed, i.e.:
1. "entries will be judged based on creativity and originality"
2. "ProPortable, Pocketmatrix and Asus take no responsibility for any injuries sustained by contestants or others" etc.
3. "entries depicting lewd, obscene, dangerous or illegal situations will be automatically disqualified" etc.

RE: sob stories
You know, I entered that contest too. I was never under the impression that the judges were looking for an emotionally-compelling story... until I saw the winner's entry. When asked how I would use the MyPal, I attempted to be honest, coherent and intruiging.

Please don't take this the wrong way - but you get sob stories by rewarding sob stories. There were plenty of good entries with interesting ideas for PDA use. Maybe this type of contest could be successful with just a bit of tweaking? i.e. "direct appeals and overt begging will be ignored", etc.

crazy ideas

RE: what people are willing to do
First of all, the contest could be simplified by narrowing it down to the creative display of one logo from one stakeholder. When I first heard about the contest, I considered the following:
- going up to the top of the CN Tower (Toronto), placing the logo on the glass floor, and taking a picture (so you see the long drop and city underneath)
- getting a security guard at the Ontario Legislature (where I was working) to pose with the logo
- painting the logo on the back of my neck, and getting pictures of me from behind doing all kinds of things to unaware people (ordering a sandwhich at Subway, talking to a police officer, etc.)
- shoveling the snow in a driveway to make a big logo
- taping banners along the sides of my old beatup car and driving places

Ben,

You've got some great ideas.

About the 716 contest this time last year... we honestly thought that loser was believable and didn't take into consideration people would waste their time lying for a contest. You live and learn and wouldn't do something EXACTLY like that again.

Anyone else have ideas or is this going to be just between Ben and myself?
