Cheez, that's only true once you reach a certain point. There are, however, grammatical standards that must be upheld. These don't fit into the category of "writing style" so they can be judge, and a person can be chastised for mistakes. Some rules aren't written in stone, though.

Such as not using an "And", "But", or "Or" at the beginning of a sentence. Some of the best authors in human history have ignored that rule, and for good reason.

But someone that misplaces commas, uses excessively long sentences, uses its instead of it's when refering to "it is", using "then" when "than" is meant (when items are being compared, not sequential events), replacing "well" with "good", and many other errors is worthy of chastisement. This is identical to when a newbie releases his or her first Counter-Strike map to the public. Most of the time it sucks, and (s)he's ridiculed. But as that person learns techniques and gains knowledge he or she becomes a better mapper. Just as in writing. If you learn from mistakes made you become better. But if you blow of criticism and the people that spout it, you will only end up hating everyone and yourself.
This is why I'm so critical. By judging all, I can more quickly make them better people. Though most of the time I get jack slapped by that girl with the long fingure-nails.
