Okay, i realise that i'm a bit slow on this because i'm not really into RTS games but i just looked at the original Argentum thread and noticed exactly how long people have been waiting! 8O I understand the impatience better now, but maybe there's a silver lining: the developers would've had the time to tweak and perfect it, right? True gaming greats take time to develop, look how long it took for Max Payne! Hopefully, by the time Argentum is released, all this would've been forgotten and all we'll be left with a PPC gaming great! ...Or maybe we'll just be playing Snails 2 - Super Championship Edition! :)

Also, RwGast: Yeh, the screenshots in my sig are from 2 projects i'm working on. I posted a couple of early screenshots in another thread entitled '3d models needed' (I think). Lemme know if you'd like to see more recent shots. BTW Thanx 2 everyone who's contacted me & expressed an interest. It's appreciated! :)

Max Payne involves many tens of hours of gameplay, revolutionary 3D graphics, incredible sound effects and music, actors, artists, real life textures, even more graphical effects, well thought out storyline. That's why it took 4+ years.

PocketPC Games, which aren't quite to the level of Genesis or SuperNES in the area of length, storyline, etc., take about 3 months from start to finish. Argentum, unfortunately, was plagued with one problem after another. And yes, all the delays have made the game seem less fun to me. I'm not sure one year and two months is worth 8 hours of gameplay (yes, CARPE has said that's how long the game will be) with no replay value or skirmish mode what-so-ever.

Official Response

Postby shervin » Mar 10, 2002 @ 11:02am

I want to officially apologize on the behalf of Ionside to everyone for the delays that have occurred in the release of Argentum and the recent exchanges on this forum.

A few points:

1) Ionside is a essentially 3 person company; with each person residing in a different time zone around the globe. Fredrik is in Sweden. Javier is in Argentina. I am in Washington, D.C. and am an investor who handles most business development, contracts and legal costs. This being said, Ionside cannot be expected to have the resources of companies with access to more resources, or companies whose employees are actually in the same city! Most companies with 10X more resources take as long, if not longer, developing a game of this quality.

2) There have been 2 major reasons for the delays:

a) We want to create a game that will make everyone (not just loyal PPC enthusiasts like yourselves on this Forum) but the general public take notice of the PPC as a gaming platform. This means that the developer team has had versions of this game that could have been released earlier but those versions did not meet the previously mentioned requirement. Everyone, even the most rabid critics, will appreciate us for this standard when the game is released.

b)Legal and contractual issues re: publishers and artwork had to be worked out. Most have; however, we were recently shocked with a major surprise on one of those fronts and are dealing with the reprucussions. We were not in control of this surprise at all. I am not privy to discuss the details; but we are confident that we can find alternative solutions and get the game, which is now complete, released.

3) Argentum, as of March 1st, is complete and a gold copy is ready to be released. What i mentioned in 2(b) is the reason why we cannot release the game.

4) Ionside developers should never had made as many disclosures as they did on this forum; especially regarding possible release dates. They felt highly comfortable in this forum, for understandable reasons since they disclosed this game when it was just a twinkle in their eyes and you have all watched, nurtured and supported them all along. However, once they decided to form a company that comfort level and the disclosures became inappropriate. I would hope in the end that you give them some credit for their honesty. I can assure you that the future games Ionside is working on will be handled quite differently and lead to much less frustrations on all fronts.

5) Some of the most vitriolic attacks are coming from certain individuals who are extremely careless about their attacks against individuals. I would like to ask this forum to please tone down its personal attacks against individuals and refocus itself on the games themselves again.

6) 99.9% of comments about Ionside's internal politics, contracts, contractors, non-payment, distribution deals are false. All of these issues are covered my confidentiality clauses in our agreements so we cannot respond to to them.

I have faith that the now completed Gold version of Argentum will impress many people about the capabilities of the PPC as a gaming platform. I believe that the quality of final product is a quantum leap for the PPC and will make many of you, not all of you of course :), conclude that it was worth the wait.

Finally, this will be the final post on behalf of Ionside and by Ionside's developers until Argentum is released.
