Grand Theft Auto coming to PocketPC?

Payback - speed

Postby Dave Johnston » Apr 13, 2002 @ 10:16am

Payback - look at those screenies... whoo, lots of alpha blending, 3D models and collisions going on. Neato lighting and effects.

And this on a PPC. 206Mhz. No FPU. At most 16MB RAM free for such a game (on average).

With a 'player'-type interface.

Anyone any idea how fast/slow it'll run? I'd be amazed if it got past 10fps.

I mean, it's all very nice, and a cool initiative, but no one's mentioned that the 'higher-end' games may not work (playably) on the PPC's at all - which would be a huge shame. I really hope they've done something real clever to get it running...

That's exactly what i've been thinking. How can it run at a decent speed if it's not exactly running 'natively'. I know that Amiga Anywhere is very efficient and all, but inevitably performance is always the trade-off when a company tries to acheive cross-platform compatibilty. Seeing as normal PPC games struggle to acheive that kind of complex 3d graphics, i'm pretty sure that 'Payback' will run at much less than 10fps. Also, the game would obviously be set up to use a more conventional control system for other platforms, how would that contend with the multi-keypress problems of some PPCs, if it weren't addressed directly?

I'm still kinda sceptical about this 'Amiga Anywhere' technology, but at the same time very interested. It's a brave idea but whether they'll pull it off successfully is still to be seen. Less ambitious titles could work well though.

Apparently it was really playable after just a couple of months of conversion to Amiga-anywhere. To be honest though I don't really know how it will run or what machine spec you'll need. Try emailing James at Apex Designs.

As an Amiga owner, I'm trying to figure out exactly what this actually has do to with Amiga. Is it an emulator? Does it emulate the custom Amiga chips, so developers code for virtual hardware? That would explain how it runs full-speed on diverse hardware. The virtual Amiga hardware would be the restraining factor. So obviously you would only be using a fraction of a 2 ghz machine's processing power.

If this is an emulator, why can't I run any of my hundreds of Amiga games / apps on it?

Yeah that's what I meant; native speed. ie being run on Amiga-Anywhere won't limit the speed in any way. Obviously by full speed I didn't mean it would run the same on a 200MHz Pocket pc as it would on a 3GHz G5. To be honest I'm surprised you thought that was what I meant. This isn't alien technology after all.....its just great technology! :)

You can expect the same speeds (at least) from Amiga-Anywhere games as you would from native games except these ones will run on any machine. :D
