I doubt that Macs will be 2 GHz by anytime in 2003. Yes, I read that little "forecast" thing, too. And no, I don't think that it's realistic.
BTW, 64-bit isn't a subset in the Sledgehammer... It is also native.
I am a system integrator. I know how to get good deals... (Then again, so does anyone who knows how to use ...)
Ha! $1500 for a Sledgehammer processor!
More like $300, but I might save money and get cpus that are 10% slower and pay only $150...
Yeah, I was going to say Mandrake 9, but hey...
Why would I need to recompile? I'm sure someone else will do it for me, or at least test it. They include the SMP Linux kernel when you install most modern desktop Linux distros. And 64-bit Linux has been available for a long time, too. Where do you think AMD got their 64-bit OS for their first ever demo of the Hammer?
I refuse to buy a Mac. I will never do it. Well, if I ever buy a Palm (ha!), I might do anything... Like become a serial killer or something...
Anyways...
Seriously, Moose. I do know what I'm talking about. I just put together a dual processor Athlon MP 2-U rackmount NAS RAID server for the company I work for. (well... I only put one cpu in it... I picked the board because it had 64-bit PCI slots.) I also installed Red Hat on it and Windows 2k. It won't actually use those (I am testing the speed of the RAID device(s)), it will use a sort of embedded linux disk image.
What's this thread about, again?
Die, Palm, Die. If that offended you, then get rid of your Palm OS device.
