Background noise after DVD rip....

Background noise after DVD rip....

Postby Jwilliams78 » May 11, 2001 @ 2:21pm

I just copied my "Dumb & Dumber" DVD through the "DVD to Pocket PC" how-to. Everything is great, except that there is a lot of background noise from the audio... Very annoying. Any ideas?

I haven't gone through the How To yet, but it sounds like you've got a problem with the Dolby Digital Audio conversion.

What did you do to rip the audio?

hmm.. the only thing I can think of is sound card noise. Also, the microdrive will also cause some background noise if you are playing with it. How bad is it?...

the howto is brand new and may have a few problems.. 999.. any suggestions for it?

I've gotten background noise in a few of my ripped DVDs. It's at a high frequency and sounds like, well, static, very fuzzy. It only happens when there's another noise. It's part of the compression in the MPEG codec I think. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Oh ya. It's not the speaker either. I've hooked it up to headsets and even computer speakers and the noise is still there. Could it be the amp on the PPC itself?

i know one thing. i think thats like an unspoken rule or something. No one tells you when you buy your ppc that it will pop everytime the stupid amp clicks in that really pisses me off. Especially on some games on MameCe its like a constant popping sound. ARggh couldn't they have fixed that.

Moose, have you tried playing one of the MPEGs on your desktop machine to see if it still has the audio noise?

Dan East

I find that using "mono" instead of "joint stereo" in the channel mode actually has less background noise. I also used 64 kbits/sec instead of 128. It sounds better... I am currently converting the avi to mpg using 32 kbits/sec to see how that sounds.....

I ripped the audio using FLASKMPEG. The codec I used was PCM @ 48000hz....

Chuck: There's no popping noise when the speaker turns on.

Dan: woops, I forgot about that. Yes I did play it on my computer and it still has the same amount of background noise. I had tried that when I first encoded it and noticed that but it just sounded so much worse on my dry pocket pc that I just completely forgot. Encoding DVDs is a chore.
