Racing Days

Racing Days

Postby Dan East » May 10, 2001 @ 10:35am

Well, I just tried out the Racing Days demo, and it is very impressive! The onscreen steering could use some work, but otherwise it looks and performs extremely well. You can get it here:

Oh, and if you aren't fortunate enough to own an iPaq then you'll have to wait another week (MIPS devices). ;D

Dan East

Moose, I have been going through the boards and I have come across three messages saying how sad you are. Just hop on the anything boards and spill it.

I hate games that dont work for lefties. Really, I really hate it... (except for Chopper Alley, that can be played in portrait mode too.)

Man, I really had my hopes up for this game...

I don't know which is a worst "left - right" driving game, this game, or Cruisin' USA. Talk about disappointment.

Kinda peeves me to see such attention to detail in the game. It would lead you to believe that the game is really in tune with the sport of driving, but sadly, it's anything but.

There's no Drifting engine in place, so it's merely a properly timed brake and steer to negotiate corners. B O R I N G.

Perhaps it's just me, but I'm only getting music as well, no engine/tire/crash noises.

On a side note, after seeing my iPAQ render something other than Quake for a change, it makes me believe Need For Speed is totally possible (atleast the driving engine in NFS is decent). The PPC polygon envelope is roughly between the clipping distance on the Saturn and the clipping distance on the PSX, so a nice happy medium of about half a mile viewing distance.

Anyhow, if the controls and drift mechanics (or lack there of) were worked on, perhaps this game would be more successful at what it's trying to immitate; Namco's RidgeRacer.

I guess I should qualify my original post a bit more. I thought, visually, that the game does extremely well (fps & quality). Being that I played if for a whole lap I obviously wasn't reviewing the overall gameplay. I just noticed the blaringly poor onscreen steering. You have to hold the stylus dead-center to center the wheel. Being that there are no onscreen guides as to where that area is, it makes it incredibly difficult to control. I would recommend something similar to the mlook of PQ, where the center point is relative to where the user first placed their stylus. Thus if you got "lost" as to where center was, you could quickly lift and place your stylus back on the screen, and the new initial tap position would be center.

Dan East

I'm thinkin for us mips processor ppl, we should have a real control since we do not have a dumb button problem, if its gonna be landscape then we could use the wheel on the side u know for turning that'd be cool and different :)

Or we could just use the D-Pad and not the wheel, but of course the wheel IS the D-Pad so you can use it anyway! So that was a very fruitful suggestion, seeing as how it's impossible to NOT impliment that.
